Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has been given a new government role, several months after President William Ruto removed him from the Cabinet. The latest appointment signals Namwamba’s return to public service after a period away from active government duties.
President Ruto appointed Namwamba as Kenya’s new High Commissioner to Uganda on Wednesday, January 21, as part of a wider diplomatic reshuffle that affected several Kenyan missions in the region.
The changes appear aimed at strengthening Kenya’s foreign relations and repositioning key figures in strategic roles abroad.
Namwamba’s appointment comes after his controversial exit from the Sports docket during last year’s Cabinet changes, which saw several ministers dropped or reassigned. His return in a diplomatic role suggests continued confidence in his experience and political influence, despite his earlier dismissal.
He replaces Ambassador Joash Maangi, who has been serving as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda since 2024. However, Maangi has not been sent home.
Instead, he has been redeployed to Brussels, Belgium, where he will now represent Kenya to the European Commission, a move viewed as a promotion to a key international posting.
President Ruto’s latest appointments highlight a growing trend of reassigning former Cabinet Secretaries to diplomatic positions, rather than excluding them entirely from government. This approach appears designed to retain institutional knowledge while balancing political considerations.
As High Commissioner, Namwamba will serve as Kenya’s top diplomatic representative in Uganda. His responsibilities will include overseeing diplomatic relations, promoting trade and investment, and safeguarding the welfare of Kenyans living and working in the neighboring country.
One of his key priorities will be strengthening bilateral relations between Kenya and Uganda, two East African nations with deep historical, economic, and cultural ties. Uganda remains one of Kenya’s most important trading partners, making the role especially significant.
Namwamba will also be tasked with promoting Kenya’s economic interests by supporting Kenyan businesses seeking opportunities in Uganda. This includes encouraging cross-border trade, investment partnerships, and regional economic cooperation.
In addition, his office will provide essential consular services to Kenyans in Uganda. These services range from passport renewals and documentation to legal support and assistance during emergencies or crisis situations.
Beyond bilateral engagement, Namwamba is expected to play a role in advancing regional integration through the East African Community (EAC). This includes supporting policies that promote free movement, economic growth, and shared development across member states.
