Police in Bondo, Siaya County, have launched investigations following the drowning of a 20-year-old herdsman in River Yala at Kayogo Village, Abom Sub-location.
The deceased was identified as Brian Matendechere, who reportedly went to graze livestock along the riverbank on Tuesday evening but failed to return home, raising concern among those he lived and worked with.
According to area Assistant Chief Philip Chunga, the family that had employed Matendechere raised the alarm after noticing his prolonged absence.
A search was immediately mounted, during which the livestock he had been herding were found unattended along the riverbank, but the young man was nowhere in sight.
Mr. Chunga said Matendechere’s clothes were later discovered a few metres from the river, intensifying fears that he may have drowned.
Due to poor visibility, the search operation was suspended overnight and resumed early Wednesday morning with the help of a local diver.
The body was eventually retrieved from the river and taken to Bondo Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.
Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances that led to the incident.
